Flat-edge Pen Sketch

I wanted to start sketching again today. So, I picked up Jack Hamm’s book on drawing people and found a lot of great information about proportions and ideas for drawing practice.

One suggestion was to work with a flat-edged pencil. It allows you to easily vary the line and create quick suggestions of eyes, lips, etc.

I couldn’t find my flat pencil, so I grabbed my flat-edged pen instead. I had a great time filling several pages with eyes, noses and lips. I then turned my eye to the mirror and my family.

These are a couple of the better sketches I did. One of my wife, who graciously held still for me, and another of me looking fierce in the mirror. That one isn’t as accurate, but that’s ok. It was fun!

I think I may have found a new favorite pen in the process. I loved being able to twist and turn the pen tip to get different kinds of wavy lines and variable-width lines.
