Squiggly lines

Squiggles add character to the hand

As I was leaving work yesterday I got stuck behind a distracted driver. We were in traffic and she wasn’t moving forward when the cars in front of her did. She had her hand out the window in a bit of an offhand gesture. I was intrigued.

I took a moment while waiting for her to move and concentrated on the shape her hand-made.

Then, today, during a break at work, I tried to put that shape down on paper. I came up with the image above.

Notice that the hand and the arm have a bit of a squiggly shape. Very seldom do we see completely straight or perfectly curves shapes in nature. The squiggles give the impression of a whole bunch of underlying forms: muscles, bones, tendons, etc.

Here is another squiggly sketch. Notice the feet. Squiggles have so much more interest to me than plain old straight or subtle lines.

Relaxing in a hammock. note the feet.
